Thanks again Balliol - the teeth on the ring gear look and feel OK as far as can be seen - but I'll take a longer look just to be sure...P

Yes, it’s well worth checking the ring gear. Minor marking can sometimes be cleaned up using a thin file through the starter motor orifice. As I recall many starter rings are a separate hardened steel toothed ring, shrink fitted onto the flywheel, so the teeth are less prone to damage than the cog. Not sure if this applies to a Daf.

My DAF575 starter had its cogwheel replaced by my shipyard in Holland.  Six months later, I needed a new starter cog - and a new flywheel, which was so worn it was chewing up the starter cog.

Thanks again Balliol - I'm actually moored at Iron Wharf - but getting a series of shrugging shoulders - in the nicest possible way.  But I'll try Dave Patrick - P

The mention of Faversham stirred the grey cells. I think I dealt with Dave Patrick at Sittingbourne when I had a problem with a barge at Hoo.

Alternatively, the guys at Iron Wharf will surely know somebody.

You don't need to go to Holland. These units are pretty international! I was actually docking in Holland when my starter failed on the way up there (but it worked well enough if you hit it with a hammer!). It was much cheaper to get the unit reconditioned in England whilst the ship was on dock.

Many thanks Derek and Balliol.   My barge is in Faversham, Kent.  But I go to the Netherlands regularly and so will try marktplaats...

Any good local auto electrical workshop should be able to repair or recondition for you, or supply a service exchange unit. Unfortunately there are not many of those workshops around now. My local man has given up and retired in the face of the increasing complexity of modern vehicles! He says he is not the only one by far!

However there are a number of firms on the internet, e.g. at random

www.guyautoelectrics.co.uk/starter-motors/

I used one company a few years ago for my Daf starter but I can't remember which one and the receipts file is not with me.

Remember also that many starter units are all the same basic motor but with different cogs etc. As far as I recall my Daf starter is the same as one for a certain Bedford engine (466?) but don't quote me.

That does look very sad. Easy to source on  www.marktplaats.nl/q/daf+575/ Not sure where your boat is.

Starter motor for. DAF 575 was created by Paul Horsman
Dear All,

I need to repair the starter motor on Friso which has a DAF 575 and can't find any details in the manual for what type of starter motor it is.  It looks like it needs a re-build - and a new set cog on the bendix.  The motor has been missing engaging the ring-gear and the ends of the cogs are chewed - see pic.  Can anyone advise where I can get a repair or renewal?

Thanks
Paul
