It’s deeply unfortunate that the already large exclusion for US residents in most states has been widened to all. Whether HK-J could have told existing customers earlier than the renewal notice is unknown but it’s been clear that the underwriters have been changing their decisions often since Brexit (though sometimes in the customer’s favour but not in this case.)And when they do say no, it’s not arbitrary but the laws of the respective territories. They can’t do anything about that.

Canada has been excluded for ages. It’s obviously your call if you’re in Australia and New Zealand that you don’t want to ask the question but I wouldn’t be dropping it as an option without checking if there’s any likelihood of that applying to those residents. Why would you do that???

First Canadians, then Americans - I wonder if it would be prudent to ask what their plans are for those owners based in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa? Are they going to get the same 30-day notice dropped on them without warning?

Our (AU-owners) plan to approach H-KJ for our barge insurance is at an end.

Have you tried Pantaenius in Plymouth? After we were dropped by EFM, then DNA we were pointed towards them in 2022. They cover our Dutch Registered boat with UK owners. Ironically Pantaenius is a German Company!

HKJ have now advised:

'I have spoken with the underwriters and they have confirmed that from now on we can no longer accept new risks from US owners and from the 1 st January 2024, we can no longer accept US customers renewals. Our insurers have removed our facility for this under our agreement with them.'

Well - that is clear - if disappointing.........

Hello,

I have asked our contact at HKJ to confirm their policy on insuring US owners and whether there are any changes to the individual states that they are allowed to trade in.

I knew this, Peter but they were more than happy to take my money for the last couple of years. It was on my initiative that I learned that my cover ends early January. Who knows when they were going to inform me of this action sending me, like Douglas, scrambling for coverage at the last minute. This constant churn from UK companies (this is the third to refuse to renew my policy in 15 years of ownership) has certainly put me off ever using a UK company again!

DNA are a broker, not an insurer - so will search for an insurer that can accommodate any need.

Of course they may not be able to find an insurer in some cases, but they don't have pre-exclusions like an insurance company.

HK-J are pretty flexible but are not legally able to insure people from some US states.  See Here

Thanks for this, Douglas.

I was going through old emails and I did get a quote from them several years ago. I guess I will be contacting them again.
