I'm not sure how navigable (in the modern sense) the Haine was east of Mons. I studied this some years ago with the aid of old maps and as I recall I concluded that La Haine was used as a feeder to the Canal du Centre somewhere near Obourg. From just east of the Grande Large at Mons downstream (to the west) it was definitely the primary navigable route (as a canalised river) through to France. The channel can be seen running alongside and crossing under the E19 west of Mons. I did also work out the connection with the long concrete aqueduct that can also be seen immediately south of the motorway for several miles, something to do with a replacement feeder stream after the more recent creation or enlargement of the Kanaal Nimy-Blaton-Peronnes, where no doubt the levels were all adjusted to eliminate locks.

A lot can still be traced using Google Maps, and the Derivation de la Haine can be clearly seen feeding through to the canal Pommeroeul-Conde; indeed it was silt from the Haine that precipitated (no pun intended) the closure of the canal through to Conde.

Just as a by-the-by, the Waterkaarten app suggested a route from Pommeroeul to Strépy along La Haine, which preceded the Canal du Centre. Now a tiny abandoned waterway it was a good reminder of the area's mining history and the value of the old ascenseurs. La Haine joined the French section of the Pommeroeul-Condé for coal to France as well as to Charleroi & the Sambre.

Peter Cawson wrote: PS - If the Pommeroeul a Conde is now re-opened, perhaps someone with 2022 Navigo could also check if that is now shown as a valid through route. It was shown in earlier versions as 2 cul-de-sacs.

It was very definitely still closed a few days ago, still at the BE/FR border.
