We were in Marieul-sur-Ay today, "recklessly spending our children's inheritance" (thank you Brian Strange) on champagne, and took the chance to walk and drive about and see what is going on with the stoppage. We can report that the actual section of canal that is in front of Marieul is just fine. There are many boats tied up on the grassy quai and most of the pontoons are full as well. The problem starts at the upstream end of that bief, lock 13 Marieul, to lock 12 at Tours sur Marne. That section has a narrow thread of shallow water down the middle. It appears that the bank or dike that breached or threatened to breach was on the side separating the canal from the Marne River itself and it is that that they are re-building. There were some white trucks and VNF vans at lock 13, but no workers in sight, though to be fair is was after 4 PM.
