I should have mentioned what system we have (silly me!). Our AIS and GPs are both Furuno with (passive?) little mushroom antennas on the roof.

At the beginning of the season we had trouble with extended start up times , 10mins, for the GPS, then it would drop out for a period but would eventually stabilise.

After searching the web , and input from forum, it seemed that it was the battery in the antenna. This was confirmed by Raymarine. The battery powers the memory which holds the satellite information. Raymarine said it was not likely to completely crash once established.

If your set is over 10years may be worth checking. However the battery is not easily changed and the new antennas have a new protocol.

Isn't progress wonderful.

Our GPS has been losing its signal from time to time. Never takes very long.... a few seconds then it's back. Then it drops again. Etc...

It first occurred when we're deep into Wallonia so my first thought was "bad GPS reception in the area" but I'm beginning to dismiss that idea as being the origin of the problem.

Anyone else had similar issues with GPS signal?
