TOPIC: Sailing Barges Interest Group

Sailing Barges Interest Group 05 Sep 2011 14:17 #31732

Hi Dick
I am in an odd situation as I have contracted a disease, CIDP, that has left
me weak so my Tjalk sailing days may be over I will have to wait to see what
strength I regain.

I have reasonable experience at sailing, RYA asst sailing instructor etc,
and have taken her out in fairly brisk conditions and am impressed with how
she sails but don't think I am adjusting the leeboards for best effect and
side swell is an issue but suspect extra ballast will only make her too
stiff as when she is rolling the mast is already moving fairly quickly. I
have thought about bilge keels but she is 99 years old and I am reluctant to
add them and I'm not comfortable with the strain on the leeboards by
dropping them so I steer to take swell on the quarter or the bow, though she
doesn't head to wind too well so if I get my health back I have already
bought a sail and I'm thinking of making a gaff topsail to see how she does
then.

I am interested and my address is currently Karen Taylor 12 Waterloo Road
Lanark ML11 7PZ as she is helping me and I'm not safe for Het Leven, she is
my home as well but this is available from the National Library of Scotland
so if it is any trouble don't worry I will be able to borrow it.

Regards

John

Hello John,
Don't think the book is what you need: it's very much a guide to types
of Dutch sailing barges rather than a technical manual on how to sail
them.
Still an interesting read though. So if you are still interested then
email me direct with your postal address.

Dick

I understand that work is in progress, in conjunction with David E, for
DBA to produce a new combined version of both his Dutch Barge books. I
gleaned this from Paul Goldsack at the recent Kingston rally. Not sure
how long it will take but it appears to be happening.

OK I had a thought that it has to be lodged with the National Library of
Scotland for copywrite protection and it is available for loan so I shall be
able to borrow it, the same will be true in London.

I've just done a Google search and come across one copy for sale through Amazon.com at:
www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0953223108/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&redirect=true&condition=all

Doubt anyone is going to buy it though at the price they are asking: $321.73 PLUS $3.99 shipping!!!

I know David E approached DBA for assistance with re-publishing both these books as well as an as yet un-published work. Not sure what the outcome was...except we haven't seen anything yet? Don't know exactly to whom he addressed his overture?

Dick
I would be really interested in reading your book and promise to return it
as I haven't mastered the leeboard settings and if it has any guidance on
ballast as side swell is a problem and have had to tack to avoid it, that
was after going through Corryvracken (nearly slack water but still had
interesting tide rips) and into the Atlantic.
I still hope to have her sailing so would appreciate.

Stuart and Debbie,

As has already been pointed out to you, you are subscribed to this discussion forum and that is why you have been receiving these e-mails. I have changed your subscription to "no mail" so you do not receive postings by e-mail. You may change that at any time either to receive e-mails or to completely unsubscribe if you no longer entertain an interest in sailing barges.

Hello Jess,
Am a bit far from Brissle, as I'm moored near Namur in the south of
Belgium, but I always keep a good stock of tea bags aboard, so if
you're ever this way you're welcome.
I have a 17 metre Sk?tsje, a small Tjalken, built in 1912 - or as a
friend pointed out, the same year as the Titanic!
David Evershed wrote an excellent book called the Dutch Barge Book
about sailing barges (and a sequel about motor barges), but it's out
of print.
I have a copy that you can borrow if you swear to send it back! It's
the best book in English that I've come across.
Apart from that am always happy to talk/type about sailing barges, so
feel free to ask.
Regards,
Dick Monk
