Swale Barge Match 19 Jul 2010 13:41 #21460

Ian:
Pubs first. There are two and you won't be able to miss either of
them. The Ferry Inn is in the high ground of the Isle of Sheppey
looking down onto the Swale moorings - accessible via a concrete (and
slippery!) causeway) The Shipwright's Arms is just off the Swale, 400
yards or so up Faversham Creek at its junction with Oare Creek - the
Swale Barge Match prize giving (and supper - normally a fish and chips
and burger vans) is traditionally held in the gardens of the
Shipwrights.
Moorings. The Swale at Harty Ferry is one of the loveliest moorings
in this corner of the south-east coast (if it was in the Solent you
wouldn't be able to move for miles and miles of buoyed moorings, but
the Eastern Swale isn't like that) There is always acres of room for
shoal-draft barges - best position is out of the fairway, anchored a
good cable and a bit off the Isle of Sheppey side of the Swale.
Hope this helps.

Dear all

I'm considering taking my Tjalk Verbeelding to the Swale Barge match - not
to race competitively but perhaps to follow everyone around at a safe
distance. Is anyone else considering going (safety in numbers) and can
any one who been before tell me about moorings on the Swale plus any other
useful info (good pubs etc)

As this is the first time we will have sailed Verbeelding if there are any
experienced barge sailors who would be interested in joining us feel free
to contact me.

Many thanks

Ian
