I used a 50/50 mixture of wood preservative and raw linseed oil, which really soaks in well. However this will turn black over time unless you put some sort of top coating on. I use Tonkinois varnish on my mast and spars, but have used Protek Royal Exterior Finish on my wooden leeboards. The latter contains modified linseed oil, but is water based so is easy to apply.Tony

Subject: mast and spar treatment?

what would you recommend painting/coating a mast in?
i am not too worried about it looking shiny and varnished, i just want something like tannelising solution or creosote or dainish oil type product something that will get into the wood and prevent any future decay.
low maintanence and ease of use prefered!!!

If it already has some rot you migth try Lignu http://www.lignu.nu/ penetrating epoxy sealant. It's good, if you can really soak the wood (ideally dip it) and if the wood can be first dried out. However it's not as good as they claim and is expensive. Don't use it on ply it will weaken the laminate glue in my experience.

I've often thought some slow setting expoxy glue mixed with solvent would do the same but would probably be more expensive.
