TOPIC: can i change the Electricity and water supplier on mooring

can i change the Electricity and water supplier on mooring 30 May 2020 02:53 #116339

yes.....my 1000 watt of panels keep me supplied from March - September w/o any worries. ( have not been around in winter times enough)

But expanding it with another 600 watt this year....now hoping the marina will go to a supplier who will pay for the electric we can put back in .....

Saul, I'm not sure what country you are in but in UK it is illegal under the 'Resale of electricity act' to charge more per kwh than is paid to the provider. It is of though permissible and a grey area for the marina to make a 'standing charge' for the provision of the infrastructure on their land through which you get your power.

We also own a mooring in a marina on the Great Ouse but the marina charge a monthly fee for power provision and then meter at cost the kwhs. Of course if you only use a very small amount of power you may be better off paying the premium per kwh rather than a monthly standing charge even if you use none in the summer months when you have PV power.

We own our own mooring on a long lease. It is one of 11 berths, all privately owned. The managing agent for the mooring supplies us with electricity and water which we have to pre pay to top up. This seems quite expensive but we dont know how or if we can change supplier. Are there laws about being able to choose your own services supplier to an owned permanent mooring?
Thanks in advance

What does your lease say?
In the Netherlands the market rate for electricity is about €0.17/kWh. At our marina the contract price to supply power to the boat is €0.35/kWh. I accept the difference is the cost and maintanence of the infrastructure to get the power from the office to the boat. Mind you it is an incentive to up the solar panel contribution.
