Yes, but I'm afraid I posted here only after I saw no mechanics listed on "Suppliers" who seemed suitable.

Blue Flag 124 mentioned our friends Nils and Torild who broke down when cruising near Condé sur Marne and found a mechanic on the DBA website Directory

I am assuming that about 25 km (say, Douai) is the maximum feasible distance for calling out a man in a van. Conde is about 200 km from me, Compiegne about 120 km, worse luck.

Also, to Tam, nice suggestions. I will be talking to my (car) mechanic in Cambrai tomorrow, and will ask him to suggest possible truck or agricultural machinery mechanics who might do house (that is, er, "barge") calls. But all the peniche owners here I have talked to travel to their mechanics, sometimes as far as Belgium.

Further names still welcome from anyone in the meantime, though.

Thanks.

As another pointer I recall there being several automoteurs in the bassin rond, and I'm sure someone there should be able to help. There is also an agricultural plant hire firm not too far away, hiring out combine harvesters, tractors and the like.

I've not got contact details but there are several transport firms with fitters in Cambrai - I know they've worked on people's boat engines in the past, it would be a matter of asking, maybe in the Café de la Marine . I very much doubt that the new people in the capitainerie could help, but you could try, also if John Sargeant is on board.

As I often mention in Blue Flag, use the Suppliers Directory 'Engine & Mechanical Services' / 'France' and you will find over 20 companies in France with addresses to see who might be close and ratings and comments from members for many.

Blue Flag 124 mentioned our friends Nils and Torild who broke down when cruising near Condé sur Marne and found a mechanic on the DBA website Directory, Alain who changed the head on board and brought a bottle of Champagne to celebrate with them when finished.
Try the DBA website Member Finder to contact Nils (barge "Passe Lagom") and ask for Alain's details?
barges.org/members/member-finder
Others listed are Max Guerdin at Compiegne

Good luck

I have an engine problem. Probable worst case is head-off, but may be rocker-cover-off only. The engine is a Ford D, 4 cylinder 4-litre, a simple machine and common in tractors and trucks, with good access in the engine space.

The engine does run, but I think the barge should not travel with the fault in case that makes the problem worse.. So, I am looking for a mechanic to come to me (at Bassin Rond, 12 km north of Cambrai). I would be very grateful for any suggestions of such a person, please.

Thanks.
